Num percurso marcado pelo afeto com o espaço público, a inauguração da expo Mistura#8 foi um episódio especial para a artista brasileira Marina Guzzo. A arte acessível a quem passa pelo Jardim Botânico.
Marina, ou Nina, nasceu em Campinas, mas viveu a maior parte da sua vida em Santos, São Paulo, onde ainda vive e atua como artista, professora da Universidade Federal de SP – Baixada Santista e pesquisadora do Laboratório Corpo e Arte do Instituto Saúde e Sociedade. Mistura é um projeto de oficina e performance realizado pela artista em vários locais, desde cidades no Brasil, até no Festival de Aurillac, em França, e em Coimbra, no Festival Linha de Fuga de 2024. A oficina aconteceu na Estufa Tropical do Jardim e as participantes adornaram-se com folhas e ramos, num exercício performativo de sentir o tempo das plantas, o tempo vegetal. Desta oficina surgiu a expo Mistura 8, inaugurada no passado dia 13 de setembro, que integra o programa do Festival Linha de Fuga de 2025. A expo consiste nos registros feitos desta oficina pela artista Carlota Lagido, bailarina e coreógrafa que foi desafiada pela curadora Catarina Saraiva a trabalhar o seu olhar através da fotografia, uma ferramenta que usa pela primeira vez de forma profissional.
Nina Guzzo conta que a rua sempre foi muito importante para o seu percurso, tendo iniciado o seu fazer artístico no circo. Para ela, a democratização da arte é um aspeto importante que o espaço público permite. A artista demonstrou entusiasmo por cada pessoa diferente que ia visitar o Jardim e acabava por parar para espreitar a exposição. As plantas tornaram-se ao longo de seus projetos num traço da carreira de Marina, que reflete sobre o tempo vegetal necessário, mas também sobre o ambiente que sofre e pede por ajuda. Olhar para uma planta de uma perspetiva distinta é essencial para a artista.
Mas, diante do tema do festival deste ano, o que é amizade para a Marina?
“Amizade para mim é algo que dá sustentação à vida. Os laços afetivos que a gente vai escolhendo para além da família constroem quem a gente é, de maneira muito profunda. A gente pode entender a amizade como política porque é o jeito que a vida vai se organizando, são as pessoas que estão do seu lado. É fundamento. Mas sem ilusões, amizade precisa de trabalho, cuidado, adubo”. – Marina Guzzo
On a journey marked by affection for public space, the opening of the Mistura#8 exhibition was a special moment for Brazilian artist Marina Guzzo. Art accessible to anyone passing through the Botanical Garden.
Marina, or Nina, was born in Campinas but spent most of her life in Santos, São Paulo, where she still lives and works as an artist, a lecturer at the Federal University of SP – Baixada Santista, and a researcher at the Body and Art Laboratory of the Institute of Health and Society. Mistura is a workshop and performance project carried out by the artist in various locations, from cities in Brazil to the Aurillac Festival in France, and in Coimbra at the 2024 Linha de Fuga Festival. The workshop took place in the Tropical Greenhouse of the Garden, and participants adorned themselves with leaves and branches in a performative exercise of sensing the time of plants, the vegetal time. From this workshop emerged the Mistura 8 exhibition, inaugurated on 13 September, which is part of the 2025 Linha de Fuga Festival programme. The exhibition consists of records from this workshop made by the artist Carlota Lagido, a dancer and choreographer, who was challenged by curator Catarina Saraiva to explore her perspective through photography, a tool she used professionally for the first time.
Nina Guzzo explains that the street has always been very important to her journey, having started her artistic practice in the circus. For her, the democratisation of art is an important aspect that public space allows. The artist showed enthusiasm for each different person who visited the Garden and stopped to peek at the exhibition. Plants have become, throughout her projects, a hallmark of Marina’s career, reflecting on the necessary vegetal time, but also on the environment that suffers and calls for help. Looking at a plant from a distinct perspective is essential for the artist.
But, in light of this year’s festival theme, what does friendship mean to Marina?
“Friendship, for me, is something that sustains life. The affective bonds we choose beyond family shape who we are, in a very profound way. We can understand friendship as politics because it is the way life organises itself; it is the people who are by your side. It is fundamental. But without illusions, friendship requires work, care, and nourishment.” – Marina Guzzo
